Ways of the World: Prologue/Chapter One Reading Entry

The Prologue for Ways of the World by Robert W. Strayer introduces the prehistory to our world history. It briefly summarizes thoughts about the creation of our planet and an explanation as to how an abrupt explosion of immense power and heat could create such everchanging specimens.  According to the Prologue, and many scientists, the inconceivable power of the Big Bang caused matter, gravity, electromagnetism and energy to emerge. With great power, comes great responsibility, which gets me to thinking as to how out of no where all this occured.  The history of our planet, and humankind, puts into question as to why there is a reason to believe in a higher being, if it is known that we were created by an accumulation of thousands of cells.

Ways of the World: Chapter One: Breakthroughs to Agriculture

Beginning the reading from Chapter One, breakthroughs to agriculture, Strayer introduces the key contrasting concept from Paleolithic to Neolithic Era being the breeding of distinct animals along with the cultivation of particular crops. Transitioning from era to era created the foundation for the rest of history to follow, the "Neolithic (New Stone Age) Revolution" or "Agricultural Revolution" brought rise to growing population, animal-borne illnesses, civilization, writing/literature and more. A great highlight from this transitional time was humankind's domestication of other living things, which can later be recognized as unconsciously directing the process of evolution. In the reading, it is stated that many researchers and scientists have still questioned the fact as to why the Agricultural Revolution took so long to unfold.
